Lent 2016

During the Lenten season of 2016, Sardis will be exploring vocation: that thing God is calling each of us to do with our lives. As Jesus moved closer and closer to Jerusalem, he discerned his call through prayer and discussion with God and the disciples. As we move toward Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, we’ll spend time discerning what God is calling us to do with our lives, both individually and communally.

In worship, you’ll notice two new additions: soul collages and writing canvasses. Each week, a new soul collage will be displayed that depicts the current week’s scripture passage. In addition, there are two thought canvasses displayed in the sanctuary. Everyone is invited to write a comment, pin a meaningful quote, or even draw a picture. No rules, just express what’s on your mind about the season, or what you think God is calling us to in 2016.

We will also seek to discern our calling this season through service. Beginning February 13, Sardis will launch Six Saturdays of Service. Each Saturday, community members will explore a different way to serve our community. This year’s event are: Thanking our Police Officer (2/13); Hymn Caroling to Homebound Members (2/20); Visit to a local animal shelter (2/27); Preparing Sandwiches for Urban Ministries (3/5); Volunteering at the Habitat Restore (3/12); and Volunteering with Hospice (3/19). Check the calendar for specific details of each event.

An adult Bible Study class meets on Tuesdays at 1pm in the Meetinghouse. This spring, we will be exploring Genesis and Exodus in an effort to reconnect with our origins, and to think about our role as caretakers and partners in God’s creation.

During Holy Week, Sardis will have a Maundy Thursday communion Service, as well as a shared Good Friday Service with our sister churches Sardis Presbyterian and St. Stephen United Methodist.

We hope you will join us in discerning our call.
